Dr.
Knox Studies New Techniques for ACL Knee Surgery
Dr. Thomas E. Knox, an orthopaedic surgeon, completed
training in November to use new techniques for reconstructive
surgery and fixation of the anterior cruciate ligament
(ACL) in the knee. He is one of just three Arkansas orthopaedic
surgeons to have completed this training and the only
local surgeon to have done so, he said.
The course on “double bundle ACL reconstruction” provided
Dr. Knox nine and three-quarters credits of Continuing
Medical Education and was sponsored by the Arthroscopy
Association of North America at the Mississippi Sports
Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, Jackson, Miss.
Dr. Knox said the researchers expect
the double bundle technique to more closely recreate
the biomechanical function of the native ligament. “This new technique
replaces traditional single bundle ACL reconstruction
and may prevent long-term degenerative changes in the
knee following surgery,” Dr. Knox said. The procedure
can be done on an outpatient basis as a type of arthroscopic,
or less invasive, surgery.
Dr. Knox has practiced in Mountain Home since 1983 and
is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic
Surgeons. His practice is Knox Orthopaedics, at 3 Medical
Plaza. He is a member of the AAOS and the AANA and served
on the AANA bylaws committee through 2008. For more information,
